Community

BGET recently hosted volunteers from Spring Street International School and Institute for Village Studies for a microhydro installation in a village called Kre Ki. The following is one student's reflection of the experience.



I usually have reservations about making generalizations, but I came away with the feeling that the Karen people are all around "good people". Though we did not speak the same language, we could guess at their dispositions through their actions and their attitudes. Each day they were up at dawn, wordlessly pounding rice that was added to laboriously gathered vegetables, all in order to feed foreigners with whom they had had no contact, no knowledge, and little in common. Trust, given, without reservation, even to strangers. Each day they were the first to the work site and the last to leave, working tirelessly without a sound of protest. Work ethic held, even though each person had hours of other tasks to do. Each villager took in great responsibility selflessly, caring for others and the good of the village, down to the last 12-year-old girl supporting another's child or carrying a staggering load of wood on her back. Community, respected even though one could make an easier life elsewhere.

As I've seen again and again, it's all about the people. From a micro-hydro project, providing a village power, to a permaculture farm, providing sustainable growth, food, and housing, people always lie at the center. Did the village use the power to run electrical equipment into their homes, making their lives easier? No. They powered a school so that their children, in the distant future, could further educate themselves. Did the permaculture leaders, as would seem logical, focus entirely on living sustainably? No. Their first goal was to "achieve a greater fulfillment in our lives", to give themselves a greater purpose while living sustainably, an act they planned deliberately to help the earth and especially encourage the surrounding community to adopt these techniques.


So when I'm asked to discuss my service projects, I give a cursory description of the physical work and a detailed description of the people. The people. You do not need a common language or profession or hobby to interact, for there is one common ground that every culture shares: smiles, laughter, and the desire to learn. I realized in the village that the so-called "language barrier" is in fact a bridge to be used by the explorative traveler. Sitting in a circle at night with our host family, asking the question "koo-de-lac", which means "how do you say" in karen, with a finger pointed at an object or a charades-like gesture. Together with the villagers we sound out foreign syllables, then smile and laugh that unique laugh that comes only from this experience-trading languages, and in doing so, trading cultures. In a way, at least in my opinion, there is a heart of cultural exchange that only rarely can be achived when speaking the same language. There is an inexplicable intimacy and type of learning that is achieved when communicating without a common language. Perhaps next time I wish to truly communicate something, I will keep my mouth shut.

New additions to BGET office


The BGET office has had a few new additions in the last month including a solar hot water heater and a weather station. The solar hot water system is based on the design by Marcus Veerman of the Community Playground People which is an organization that designs and builds playgrounds in Burmese migrant schools in and around Mae Sot. Many hands went into the construction of this system including Marcus, Salinee, and previous volunteers Christina, Megan, and Josh. The system was installed by BGET technicians Sunti, Thai, Em, and new volunteer, Stony.

The system costs less than 1800 baht ($50 U.S.) to construct using materials available at local hardware shops and recycled materials. The collector is composed of an insulated painted black wooden box with black polyethylene collector tubes covered with glass panels. The storage tank is currently an insulated 30 gallon storage container. Currently the temperature has reached up to at least 45 degrees Celsius in the afternoon providing plenty of warm water for a shower.

BGET is continuing to work with Marcus to provide an easy to understand manual for the replication of this system and a link to this manual will be posted soon. In addition we hope to begin to monitor the temperature of this system as well as the system installed by Marcus at his home.




The "WeatherHawk" weather station on the roof of the BGET office was installed by BGET technicians and reads ambient temperature, wind speed, wind direction, rainfall, and sun insolation. The system will help to better approximate the available solar and wind resources here in Mae Sot. Future uses of this equipment may be useful in determining the feasability of small wind projects in mountainous areas in our work areas.

Site Surveying at Tah Po Pu





So what is the first step in planning a micro hydropower system? Go swimming! We certainly got our feet wet at Tah Po Pu, a Karen village in Tha Song Yan Province in northern Thailand. Upon our arrival, we were greeted with friendly handshakes and 'Tableu' from the adults, warm smiles from the children who, bursting with curiosity, followed us up the steep slope along the water fall to the weir site. The site we chose is about 36 meters above the powerhouse site and features large rocks and other ratures that may help us construct a sturdy cement weir. We brought along our trusty water-resistant notebook, a 100-meter measuring tape, a shorter measuring tape, a stopwatch, and our inquiring minds. We were going to find out the volumetric flow of the river, the penstock pipe length, and the transmission wire length.

To measure the flow, we chose two places in the river well away from the water fall. For each one, we measured the length across and the depth of the river at regular intervals so that we could calculate the cross-sectional area. This part required shallow wading at one of the locations, but a brave act of sacrifice at the other location. Our fellow BGET volunteer Christina waded in past her waist, getting almost completely wet putting the measuring stick into the fast-flowing water! I had just gotten over Dangue and that is my excuse for simply standing by in awe. After finding the area, we measured a length down the stream to float an object so we could find how long it would take this section of water to move a certain distance. Leaves worked okay, but they often sunk pathetically, even to our desperate chants of "Go! Go! Go!" Empty water bottles seemed to work best. In the end, we multiplied the float length by the area and divided by the float time to find the volume of water flowing per unit time in liters per minute.

On our way back, we were followed by some Karen children, chasing the ones in front of us, we merrily made our way back to the village, measuring the distance along the way to estimate the pipe length from weir to powerhouse. We were finished for the day, as far as the site survey went. Tired from the cold, rushing water, we lay and sat in one of the houses while our friend Sunti made us a delicious pork and vegetable dish. We sat in a circle on the floor and ate hungrily, pouring the hot food onto mounds of white rice. Later that night, there was a village meeting at the house of one of the village leaders. The BGET volunteers sat silently while about forty or so men spoke in Karen to one another, gathering the gist of it from body language and tone of voice. As is the way of most Karen, there was alot of laughter. If only I knew what they were saying!

After a night of sound sleep, we awoke, ate, and proceeded to measure the transmission line length. Along with the height of the water fall, which was measured earlier, we now had all the measurements needed to size the system. We thanked those who had let us stay and eat with them and said farewell to the children, but it was not a sad goodbye. We'll be back at the end of November for the installation!
